Lot 101

A rare and fine Benjarong Lai Nam Thong covered bowl painted with the Deities of the Four Elements (1 pc. ) ‘The Deities of the Four Elements’ pattern first appeared on Benjarong in the early Rattanakosin period. This particular covered bowl is produced during the reign of King Rama II. Measuring at 8 inches, it is the largest recorded bowl of its pattern. The design of this unique covered bowl features a center lotus medallion on the top handle of the cover enclosed by a band of lotus petals and leafy scrolls. The interior of the bowl is decorated with another identical lotus medallion and the bottom exterior is encircled with a band of lotus petals and leafy scrolls. The lotus motif serves as a geometric axis for the design, therefore the cover and bowl aligned together create a symmetrical masterpiece. Besides the earth, water, wind, and fire deities, the exterior is painted with twisting scrolls issuing interlocked Nagas and dancing minor deities. The Naga symbolizes fertility and dancing deities signifies joyful celebrations. In combination, one may interpret the pattern as the deities assembling to create balance in the universe. ชามมีฝาปิดเบญจรงค์ทรงสูงเขียนลายทองลายดิน-น้ำ-ลม-ไฟบนพื้นทอง "ใบต้น" (1 ชิ้น )
