A Majestic Blue Lotus Plate: The Benjarong Porcelain of Phraya Sunthon Phimon, Adorned with Gilded Floral Motifs
The exquisite Phraya Sunthon Phimon porcelain is a renowned example of gilded Thai pottery, often mentioned in the same breath when speaking of the meticulously crafted, hand-painted ceramics by Siamese artisans. Their hallmark is the graceful, flowing lines and intricate patterns, which embody the elegance and tradition of Thai painting.

Phraya Sunthon Phimon (Phle Wasuwat) brought skilled Chinese craftsmen to Thailand to create porcelain as well. He set up kilns in his own estate, importing white porcelain molds from China for the artisans to paint in the Thai style. The technique they used was known as overglaze enameling, where vibrant colors and intricate Thai motifs, often inspired by literary tales, were meticulously applied over the glazed surface.
The plate bearing Phraya Sunthon Phimon’s design, in particular, stands out not only for its delicate beauty but also for its European-inspired shape. Moreover, it carries a seal that marks the reign of Qianlong, suggesting that this plate may have been produced in China according to Siamese specifications—challenging the previous belief that such designs were solely created in Siam.
This discovery has sparked academic debate, questioning whether all of Phraya Sunthon Phimon’s ceramics were indeed produced entirely in Siam or if their origins lie elsewhere. This intriguing piece, which surfaced in the RCB Auctions, serves as a fascinating historical artifact, adding depth to the ongoing discourse surrounding the true origins of these extraordinary ceramics.
