Shòu Character

RCB Auctions has continuously selected precious antiques and decorative items for the collectors. Timed Auction for antiques and collectibles is now on www.rcbauctions.com and www.invaluable.com until 12 September 2021. Amongst the highlight items is Lot 540, a blue and white porcelain circular tray painted in interior and exterior with Shòu Characters which are one of the most interesting features of this beautiful object.

Shòu or 壽 represents one of the three most important goals in life in Chinese tradition which consist of the propitious blessings of happiness (Fú 福), professional success or prosperity (Lù 祿), and longevity (Shòu 壽). These are visually symbolized by the three "star gods" of the same names, ‘Fú Lù Shòu’ commonly depicted as three male figurines. However, Thai people are familiar with ‘Hok Lok Siew’ according to Teochew dialect instead.

‘Shòu’ (Mandarin) or ‘Siew’ (Teochew) is a star god of longevity. He is always portrayed with a high forehead and a big smile holding a large peach which is a fruit of immortality in one hand and a staff in the other. Sometimes, he is followed by a white crane bird which is another symbol of longevity.

Moreover, Shòu or longevity is commonly recognized as one of the Five Blessings which include health, longevity, virtue, wealth and peaceful death. The Shòu character is usually found on textiles, furniture, ceramics and jewelry. The character may appear alone or be surrounded by flowers, bats, or other symbols of good fortune; however, Shòu will always hold a central position.
